Somos Brasil (We Are Brazil)

Idealize by British artist Marcus Lyon and produced by ImageMagica organization, the multimedia documentary was the result of a 6 months journey around Brazil and 22,000 kilometers traveled searching for people that represent the diversity of the country.

Between the more than 100 photographed people are young, adults and aged, from different professions, as the politician Eduardo Suplicy, the industrial designer Paola de Orleans e Bragança, the journalist Eliane Brum and the monk Monja Coen.

To tell the stories of each one of then, it was include genetic analyses of ancestry tested by the project’s partner, Family tree DNA, and audios in which the characters tell their stories on their own voices.

With these three elements – picture, orality and genealogy – Somos Brasil presents an overview of Brazilian social and cultural diversity, in addition to the multiple identities of its population. This work amplifies the story and environment of each character, causing a reflection in the reader about his own identity and role in the society.

The Somos Brasil book has won three prestigious D&AD pencils, two graphite and one yellow pencil. The D&AD Professional Design Awards are recognised globally as the ultimate accolade for creative excellence.
